Shree Charani’s Four-Wicket Burst Left Japan With Nowhere to Hide

India Women’s defense of their Asian Games cricket gold medal is off to a perfect start, cruising into the semi-finals with a dominant eight-wicket win over hosts Japan in the quarter-finals at Nisshin.

Japan’s Innings Collapses

Winning the toss and electing to field, India’s bowling attack put on a masterclass from the very first over. Japan never found any rhythm with the bat, losing wickets at regular intervals as India’s spinners and seamers combined to strangle any hope of a competitive total. Shree Charani was the standout performer, delivering a sensational spell of 4/10 in her four overs, including two crucial double-wicket bursts that completely derailed the Japanese innings. She found support from Deepti Sharma and Shafali Verma, who both chipped in with important wickets, while sharp fielding and smart run-outs compounded Japan’s misery. The hosts were eventually bundled out for a meagre 57 runs in 19.5 overs.

A Formality of a Chase

Set a target of just 58, India made light work of the chase. Shafali Verma led the charge with typically aggressive strokeplay, teaming up with Richa Ghosh to smash a flurry of boundaries and take the game away from Japan almost immediately. Verma fittingly brought up the win in emphatic fashion, clearing the ropes with a massive six in the fifth over to seal an eight-wicket victory with plenty of overs to spare. Verma finished unbeaten on 40, having also picked up two wickets earlier with the ball — an outstanding all-round display.

What It Means

This dominant performance sends a clear message from the defending champions as they continue their gold-medal defense, with India next facing Bangladesh in the semi-final on Sunday. The comprehensive nature of the win — bowling out their opponents for under 60 before chasing down the target in a fraction of the allotted overs — underlines the gulf in class between India and the rest of the field at this stage of the tournament. For hosts Japan, the tournament will serve as valuable experience against one of the format’s most dominant sides, even in a heavy defeat on home soil.
