Some scorelines don’t need context. 265 to chase in a T20. Jalandhar Warriors got there in 16.5 overs with 8 wickets still standing. Let that sit for a second.
This was Match 5 of the brand-new Sher-e-Punjab T20 League, played at the I.S. Bindra PCA Stadium in Mohali — and if this is the standard the tournament’s setting five games in, Punjab just found itself a genuinely must-watch competition.
Amritsar Post a Total That Should Have Won Them the Game
Amritsar Soormas gave it everything with the bat first, and for most of their twenty overs, it looked like more than enough. Skipper Abhishek Sharma set the tone early, playing the kind of captain’s innings that usually decides a match on its own — 82 off just 36 balls, five fours, seven sixes, the sort of hitting that had Jalandhar’s bowlers searching for answers from over one.
Then Naman Dhir walked out and somehow topped it. 117 off 56 deliveries, seven fours, ten sixes — an innings that didn’t just build on Sharma’s start, it took the Jalandhar attack apart completely. Jashanpreet Sidhu added a brutal cameo late on, 33 off just 12 balls, to push Soormas to a final total of 264 for 5.
On paper, that’s a score that wins nine T20 games out of ten. Soormas had every reason to feel good walking off after twenty overs.
This Wasn’t One of Those Nine
Prabhsimran Singh had other plans.
Jalandhar’s captain and wicketkeeper walked out to open the chase and simply refused to let the total matter. This wasn’t a careful, calculated pursuit of a big score — it was a demolition. An unbeaten 125 off just 47 balls, laced with 14 fours and 8 sixes, the kind of innings that doesn’t just chase runs, it makes the required rate look irrelevant within a few overs.
Warriors were already 103 for 1 inside the powerplay — a chase of 265 reduced to a formality before the fielding restrictions had even lifted. By the halfway mark, ten overs in, they were sitting at 162 for 1. There was no tension left in this match by that point. Just a question of how many overs Jalandhar would need.
Partnerships That Buried the Required Rate
Prabhsimran didn’t do it alone, even if it felt that way. Harjas Singh Tandon played the perfect foil early in the chase, contributing 42 off 21 balls in a second-wicket stand of 109 runs that took whatever early pressure existed completely off the table.
When Anmol Malhotra came to the crease next, the pace didn’t drop for a second. He finished unbeaten on 53 off just 23 balls, striking three fours and five sixes, and combined with Prabhsimran for an unbroken third-wicket partnership of 92 runs off only 35 balls — numbers that read more like a T10 finish than the middle of a 20-over chase.
Jalandhar crossed the line with 19 balls still in hand. Two centurions on opposite sides of the same match, and it still wasn’t enough to make this one close.
A Statement Win to Open the Campaign
For Amritsar Soormas, this is a brutal way to begin a tournament. A total that would comfortably beat most sides in the country simply wasn’t enough, and their bowling attack — including figures like Gurvinder Singh’s 2 for 57 — never found an answer to Prabhsimran’s assault.
For Jalandhar Warriors, though, this is exactly the kind of statement every new franchise wants to make in its opening outing. Beating a total north of 260 with overs and wickets to spare doesn’t just win a match — it sends a message to the rest of the league about what this team is capable of when their top order clicks.
Why This Result Matters Beyond the Scoreline
The Sher-e-Punjab T20 League is only five matches into its inaugural season, and it’s already delivering the kind of cricket that gets people talking — genuine India internationals like Abhishek Sharma going head-to-head in a domestic setting, huge totals, individual centuries, and finishes that swing wildly from “competitive” to “one-sided” within a handful of overs.
If this is the pace the tournament is setting early, Punjab’s own franchise league might end up being one of the more entertaining domestic competitions on the calendar — and Jalandhar Warriors, thanks to Prabhsimran Singh, have made sure nobody’s overlooking them heading into the rest of the season.
