Man City Had 70% of the Ball Against Ipswich, So Why Did the Final Whistle Feel So Tense?

Manchester City beat Ipswich Town 3-2 at the Etihad. They were in control for most of the match, but a goal in the 90th minute from Ipswich made the finish more uncomfortable than it needed to be.

Early Goals at the Etihad

City took the lead in the 19th minute, and it looked like it would be a routine afternoon. Ipswich had other ideas and equalized just two minutes later, in the 21st minute, to silence the home crowd. City responded again in the 34th minute to go 2-1 up before halftime, and they came out after the break looking to put the match away.

City Take Control, Ipswich Strike Late

City made changes in the 50th and 61st minutes, and their third goal arrived in the 69th minute to make it 3-1. At that point the match looked finished. Ipswich made two double substitutions late on, though, and their persistence paid off with a goal in the 90th minute to make it 3-2. By then City were just seeing out time, but it made for a nervy final few minutes.

Key Stats

City dominated the ball with 70% possession and took 15 shots, six of them on target. Ipswich managed just six shots, three on target, and were caught offside five times. The visitors were also the more aggressive side, committing 16 fouls to City’s seven and picking up two yellow cards to City’s one, both of which came late in the match.

Star Names on Show

City’s side included Erling Haaland, Phil Foden, Jérémy Doku, Rúben Dias and Marc Guéhi, with Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal, and they brought on Enzo Fernández late. Ipswich’s squad featured Exequiel Palacios, Chuba Akpom and Jaden Philogene.

What It Means

City have now followed their 3-0 win at Liverpool a week earlier with another three points, continuing a strong run of results. Conceding in the 90th minute is a small blemish, but the result keeps them firmly in the title picture, and they travel to Aston Villa next Saturday. For Ipswich, the late goal will be some consolation, but they were second best for most of the afternoon.
