Abhishek Sharma’s Blistering 82 Powers India to Seven-Wicket Win Over Afghanistan

India launched their three-match T20I series against Afghanistan with a commanding seven-wicket victory at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, with Abhishek Sharma’s explosive half-century leading a rapid chase.

Afghanistan’s Rollercoaster Innings

Asked to bowl first, India’s attack immediately seized control, with a returning Jasprit Bumrah striking in the very first over to remove Rahmanullah Gurbaz for a duck. A disciplined mix of pace and spin left Afghanistan reeling at 43/5 inside seven overs, with Varun Chakravarthy — also making a successful comeback from injury — cleaning up Darwish Rasooli as the top order collapsed. Afghanistan looked to be heading for a total well below par, but Azmatullah Omarzai anchored a recovery with an unbeaten 64 off 44 balls, combining with Mohammad Nabi (33 off 27) for an 83-run sixth-wicket partnership that dragged the total to a more respectable 156/8. The recovery was helped further when Shivam Dube, forced into bowling the 20th over for the first time in his career, was taken for 21 runs by a rampant Omarzai.

Abhishek Sharma Seals a Rapid Chase

Despite the late Afghan fightback, 157 always looked a modest target on good batting conditions in Delhi — and Abhishek Sharma made sure of it in style. He smashed a whirlwind 82 off just 32 balls, striking with authority throughout, and shared a 121-run partnership with Ishan Kishan (42 off 33) — the third-highest partnership for any wicket between India and Afghanistan in T20Is. Sanju Samson chipped in with 10 off 8 balls as India cruised to victory, finishing at 157/3 in just 13.4 overs to complete a seven-wicket win with plenty of overs to spare.

Bowling Standouts

Arshdeep Singh was the pick of India’s bowlers, finishing with excellent figures of 3/19 from his four overs at an economy of just 4.75. Varun Chakravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, and Axar Patel each picked up a wicket apiece in a well-rounded bowling display that set up the chase. For Afghanistan, Mohammad Nabi picked up two wickets, with Azmatullah Omarzai chipping in with one, though their efforts couldn’t prevent a rampant Indian chase.

Player of the Match: Abhishek Sharma

Abhishek Sharma was deservedly named Player of the Match for his explosive 82 off 32 balls, a knock that effectively finished the chase almost single-handedly and set the tone for what India captain Shreyas Iyer described as an “exemplary” and “flawless” display of shot-making.

What It Means

This dominant win extends India’s unbeaten head-to-head record against Afghanistan in T20Is and gives new captain Shreyas Iyer’s transitioning squad an ideal start to a series being used as a proving ground ahead of the Asian Games. For Afghanistan, despite the loss, Omarzai’s fighting half-century and the middle-order recovery will offer genuine encouragement as they look to bounce back in the remaining two matches of the series.
