CM Punk Retains Over Johnny Gargano in Chaos-Filled Main Event — But Sami Zayn Steals the Real Headline

There are chaotic main events, and then there’s whatever just happened when CM Punk defended the Undisputed WWE Championship against Johnny Gargano. What started as a genuinely excellent title match ended with four other men brawling at ringside, a title shot getting stolen behind a referee’s back, and CM Punk walking away angrier at Sami Zayn than at the man he actually beat.

A Championship Match That Deserved Better Than the Chaos That Followed

Before any of the outside interference, this was simply a great wrestling match. Punk opened strong, bodyslamming Gargano early and stuffing his first flurry with a shoulder tackle. But Gargano has never been the kind of opponent who stays down — he drove his shoulder into Punk’s midsection, and when Punk went for the GTS far too early, Gargano countered into a hurricanrana before launching himself over the top rope to wipe the champion out completely.

From there, it became the back-and-forth battle everyone expected. Punk worked a rear chin lock, Gargano fought out, and the two traded escalating near-falls — a top-rope battle that ended in a Gargano roll-through, a superkick, a roundhouse kick from Punk, a Spear off the middle rope from Gargano. When Punk answered with a Blue Thunder Bomb for another near fall, it was clear this match didn’t need any help to be great.

It got interference anyway.

Enter Sami Zayn — And Everything Fell Apart

Just as Punk lined up another GTS attempt, Sami Zayn’s music hit, and Punk’s focus shattered instantly. While Punk and Zayn brawled at ringside, Candice LeRae snuck in behind the referee’s back and drove Punk into the steel steps with a hurricanrana. Gargano followed with a suicide dive, and suddenly a clean title match had a very unclean asterisk hanging over it.

Back in the ring, Gargano nearly stole it with a DDT — but the story kept escalating outside. Zayn, jacket off, picked up the actual Undisputed WWE Championship belt and offered it to Gargano like a gift. That’s when Kevin Owens blindsided him. What followed was a pull-apart brawl for the ages — Owens going for a powerbomb before Gunther cut him off with a big boot, Gunther then eating a sling blade from Finn Bálor. Zayn, in the middle of all of it, grabbed the title and clocked Bálor, Gunther, and Owens with it in succession — one former Shield brother taking out three former World Champions with his own title belt.

Zayn’s Sabotage, Ejection, and the Finish

Back in the ring, Punk hit Go To Sleep on Gargano — but before he could even think about a cover, Zayn nailed him with the title belt behind the referee’s back, wiping out the pin attempt entirely. Still not finished scheming, Zayn turned and whispered something to Candice LeRae at ringside, clearly setting up his next move.

He never got the chance to make it. Nick Aldis came out with a group of officials and physically ejected Zayn from ringside, finally clearing the chaos out of the match for good.

With Zayn gone, Punk recovered, lined Gargano up one more time, and put him away with a second Go To Sleep. One. Two. Three. And still the Undisputed WWE Champion — CM Punk.

And Then Punk Made It Personal

Post-match, Punk grabbed the microphone and didn’t wait for Aldis to book anything. He called his own shot — an Undisputed WWE Championship match against Sami Zayn, next week, in Mexico City. Punk made it clear this wasn’t about business. He simply doesn’t like Zayn sticking his nose where it doesn’t belong.

It’s official. Punk vs. Zayn, for the title, one week from tonight at Mexico
