India wrapped up the ODI series against West Indies 2-1, but it was the visitors who had the last word, with Shai Hope’s magnificent unbeaten 162 powering West Indies to their highest-ever successful ODI chase in a thrilling five-wicket win in New Chandigarh.
India Post a Big Total — Again
Batting first, India continued their prolific run with the bat throughout this series, built around another standout performance from the top order. KL Rahul anchored the innings with an unbeaten 129, while Rohit Sharma added a fluent 92, helping India post a daunting 351/7 in their 50 overs — a total that would have been more than enough to win on most days against most teams.
Shai Hope’s Historic Chase
What followed was one of the great individual ODI performances in recent memory. Shai Hope, who had kept wicket through the brutal heat for the entirety of India’s innings before opening the batting himself, produced an extraordinary display of stamina and skill, batting through 48.2 overs to guide West Indies home. Hope found an ideal partner in Amir Jangoo early on, with the pair putting on a rapid stand inside the first 10 overs, before continuing to anchor the chase deep into the innings, reaching an unbeaten 123 after 44 overs with the target still very much in sight.
Despite West Indies batting a man short, Hope refused to let the required rate slip away, finishing unbeaten on a sensational 162 off 143 balls to guide his side to 352/5, sealing a five-wicket win with 10 balls to spare — West Indies’ highest-ever successful run chase in ODI history, and their first win over India in the format since 2023.
What It Means
Despite the defeat, India comfortably take the three-match series 2-1, continuing their dominant recent form in home ODIs, with centuries from Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli across the series underlining their batting depth heading toward 2027 World Cup preparations. For West Indies, Hope’s innings will go down as one of the great rearguard performances in the format, salvaging pride and ending the series on a genuinely historic high as the two sides now turn their attention to a five-match T20I series.
